Following a flurry of complaints from customers, the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) has initiated a series of meetings with the country's utility companies.
The CAC says they are being arranged to discuss complaints it has received.
The first meeting was held with the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), where several concerns were highlighted.
Chief among them was the issue of electricity theft and its impact on paying customers.
The CAC team proposed that consumers in good standing with JPS should have their disconnection waived in lieu of a penalty, on the first instance of an overdue or late payment.
The JPS reportedly said it is considering the proposal.
The issue of meter tampering was also high on the agenda.
The CAC suggested that a code be implemented for dealing with consumers' complaints on that subject.
It said an independent third party should be involved in the investigation of allegations by the JPS.
