GraceKennedy urges other businesses to get involved in agriculture sector

CEO of Grace Foods Domestic, Frank James, says the GraceKennedy Group is urging other private sector members to get involved in the agriculture sector through the application of science, technology and innovation.

Jamaica imported US$963 million in food and consumer goods during the first six months of this year, while exporting only $40.7 million in agricultural items.

Mr. James was speaking Friday morning on Real Business, on Power 106, after Grace Foods provided $6.5 million to the National Irrigation Commission to finance the purchase of a new pump to make water available to farmers in St. Elizabeth.

The company also provided another $3.5 million to the farmers to purchase seeds and fertilisers.

The donation was made after GraceKennedy reported net profits of $6.62 billion on revenues of $126.39 billion during the nine-month period ended September 30 of this year.

The food division delivered a commendable performance with both the Jamaican and international segments reporting spikes in revenues and profitability.
