The Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) says it is now shifting from helping the members of the MSME sector to building capacity that will aid them in finding and penetrating new markets.
The corporation's change in direction came out of a high-level meeting between its new managing director, Daenia Ashpole, and members of the sector, including the MSME Alliance, Small Business Association of Jamaica and the Young Entrepreneurs Association.
Ms Ashpole stressed that the success of assistance to members of the MSME sector must be determined by the real impact they have on the sector and the economy, in general.
She also pointed out that the JBDC and the various umbrella bodies have a responsibility to do something to help the sector, not just to talk about doing so.
Cordell Williams, president of the YEA noted that, while significant progress has been made in the development of entrepreneurial skills, access to markets remains a very big problem.
