Jamaica could soon have access to 1.4 billion people via the African Continental Free Trade Area, as Ghana pushes for expansion to include the Caribbean.
On day two of his four-day state visit, Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama told reporters that Jamaica's inclusion could boost trade volumes and allow for greater exporting and manufacturing across the Caribbean and Africa.
"One of the things that I will champion when I become AU chair next year is to expand the remit of the African Continental Free Trade Area to include the Caribbean," he said.
Elaborating, he explained that the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area that allows members states to export goods duty-free and tariff-free into each other's markets.
"It's a one point three trillion GDP, uh, economy. And so we can plug the Caribbean in so that we can exchange goods between Africa and the Caribbean duty-free, tariff-free."
