Senate stalemate sends US shutdown into second week

US Senate Democrats blocked a Republican bill aimed at reopening the government on Friday afternoon.

The measure failed on a 54-44 vote, well short of the 60 needed to break the filibuster.

This is now the third day of the shutdown, and President Donald Trump is preparing for sweeping layoffs and spending cuts across several agencies.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the House will not meet for legislative business next week.

That move is seen as an attempt to pressure the Senate to act on the funding bill already approved by the House.
