Spur Tree Spices says it plans to plant 3,000 ackee trees as it moves to meet growing export demand for the Jamaican fruit.
Chief Executive Officer Albert Bailey says demand for ackee is currently outpacing the company's supply capacity.
However, Mr. Bailey says consumers can expect an increase in ackee supply by July, following setbacks caused by Hurricane Melissa last October.
He disclosed that the 3,000 trees will be planted across 75 acres of land by one of the company's subsidiaries, at a density of between 40 and 50 trees per acre.
According to the Department of Chemistry at the University of the West Indies, it takes about seven years for an ackee tree to begin bearing fruit.
