Tourism outlook for Jamaica dims due to Hurricane Beryl and US travel advisory, but remains above pre-pandemic benchmarks

Travel and tourism interests expect a reduction in tourist arrivals this year but say the flows will still outperform the pre-pandemic benchmark.

The negative impact on the sector's fortune is attributed to Hurricane Beryl in June and a previous travel advisory issued by the United States.

President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourism Association, Robin Russell, says there is optimism that the year will end on a good note but not as great as 2023.

The advisory in question cautioned citizens of the US to avoid travelling to Jamaica due to safety concerns.

On July 25, the US State Department updated the advisory to reflect additional information on crime and healthcare but still advised its citizens to reconsider travel to Jamaica due to crime.

And Playa Resorts and Hotels, which operates five hotels in Jamaica under the Jewel and Hilton brands, are already seeing a decline in revenue and occupancy, which they expect to weaken further.
