Mighty Gabby receives Honorary Degree from UWI

9-time calypso monarch Anthony “Mighty Gabby” Carter was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from Chancellor Professor the Honourable Sir George Alleyne during the UWI’s Graduation Ceremony on Saturday.

Gabby has had a number of awards over the years.

In 2003 he became Barbados’ first Cultural Ambassador.

In 2005, he received the Clement Payne National Hero Award.

In 2006 he was given a Living Legend Award at the inaugural Barbados Music Awards.

In recognition of his passion and vocal Pan-Africanism, was named a Nigerian Chief and given the Yoruba name Omowale (meaning ‘our son has returned home’).

Gabby  who has taught folk and calypso in Barbadian schools has reportedly written more than 1,300 songs in a  career spanning 40 years.
