Some $10 billion has been allocated in the 2023/2024 estimates of expenditure for the continued rehabilitation of the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Christopher Tufton explained that the allocation is necessary to finish the work which has become more extensive.
He reiterated that the work being done is practically the building of a brand new hospital.
"The only thing that has not changed is the original concrete structure and even that has been reinforced in a significant way. If you go there now, you will see that it is a shell but with a number of additions - roofing, reinforcement of the beams, the columns," he explained.
Dr. Tufton said while the new allocation is higher than what was previously stated when the matter was last brought up, more improvements have had to be made which were not part of the initial plan.
"We started with one problem and then all the others were added and we ended up with literally stripping the hospital building down to bare concrete and that's what we have had to do," he told the Standing Finance Committee on Wednesday.
The Health Minister insisted that the government took the long approach and decided to "fix the facility once and for all" because too often administrations "do a patched up job and then we fall back into the same position".
