International dancehall artiste, Moses Davis, popularly
known as Beenie Man, is now in custody, after turning himself in to the
authorities on Monday morning.
An arrest warrant was issued for the artist last week, after he failed to appear before the Tax Court to answer charges of tax evasion.
Beenie Man appeared before Senior Magistrate Owen Parkins on Monday morning, in the company of his attorney, Garth McBean.
Mr. McBean appealed to the Magistrate to quash the warrant, but this request was turned down.
The Magistrate reminded the attorney that Beenie Man had ignored a previous warrant last year, before setting bail at $1.5 million.
Mr. McBean argued that Beenie Man was abroad last week and missed his flight back to Jamaica, which caused him to miss the court date.
The explanation failed to impress the judge who warned that he would not tolerate any future disrespect to his court.
At news time, Beenie Man's representatives were busy trying to secure bail.
The tax authorities have alleged that Beenie Man owes the state $47 million.
$29 million of this amount is unpaid tax with penalty of $18 million.
The DJ has blamed his former management company, Shocking Vibes, for his predicament.
