Canada's new prime minister, Mark Carney, has firmly stated that Canada will never become part of the US, despite tensions with Donald Trump over an escalating trade war.
Mr. Carney says he expects respect from the US, calling US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's recent comments about Canada potentially becoming a 51st state "crazy".
He also shared plans to visit France and the UK on his first overseas trip and mentioned he has no current plans to meet Trump but looks forward to speaking with him.
When asked about a general election, Mr. Carney humorously suggested it would happen before November, though the election must be held before October.
Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre criticised the Liberals and Mr. Carney's new cabinet, claiming it consisted of the same individuals who served under Justin Trudeau, and that the party doesn't deserve another term.
