Caribbean Airlines grounds flights ahead of massive U.S. snowstorm

Caribbean Airlines has cancelled a number of flights Friday and Saturday because of a massive snowstorm that is making towards the Atlantic coast and expected to hit New York and other cities in the northeast United States.

Flights to and from JFK International Airport, including those on the Kingston and Montego Bay routes, have been affected.

Airlines in other countries suspended flights to New York and Boston ahead of snowfall which forecasters say could be the heaviest to hit some northeast cities in a century.

A report in Friday’s issue of the Trinidad Express newspaper said further disruptions to other flights could be expected.

Caribbean Airlines said contingencies are in place to move affected passengers as soon as weather conditions allow for the resumption of flights.

And the snow storm, which is being described as historic, is set to cause power cuts and transport chaos as it arrives from the Great Lakes and brings blizzards to parts of New England today.

It is expected to peak Saturday morning east of Cape Cod.

Schools have already been closed in Boston, where sustained strong winds are set to exacerbate heavy snowfall - as much as two feet in some areas.

The National Weather Service said the combination of two weather systems from the polar and subtropical jet streams will produce a potentially historic storm, with weather warnings extending from New Jersey to Maine.

Winds of up to 55 kilometres per hour with significantly stronger hurricane-strength gusts are expected to create deep drifts.

In Boston, Mayor Thomas Menino urged businesses to consider allowing staff to stay home to reduce the risk of commuters getting stranded.

In New York, where memories of October’s Hurricane Sandy are still fresh, Mayor Michael Bloomberg advised persons to stock up on supplies, including medicine.
