Incoming CARICOM chairman and Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has urged the region to shape its narrative, while Guyana's President Dr. Irfaan Ali said it is time for the region to boldly embrace its successes.
Dr Ali has also appealed to the regional media to highlight the regional bloc's achievements.
He says it is important for the region to build systems that work for it, brushing aside persons who have in the past consistently questioned the relevance of CARICOM, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The prime ministers were addressing yesterday's opening ceremony of the 47th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM in Grenada.
The highlight of the opening ceremony was the admission of the Dutch-speaking island of Curacao as the sixth associate member of the grouping.
Former West Indies cricket captain Sir Clive Lloyd and Roderick Rainford, a former CARICOM secretary general, were given the region's highest award, the Order of the Caribbean Community.
