CPFSA removes abandoned babies from Spanish Town Hospital

The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) says it has removed all five babies who were previously abandoned by their parents at Spanish Town Hospital.

The agency says it has secured the relevant court orders for the children.

Two of the babies have been placed with families through the CPFSA's foster care programme, while the third, who has special needs, has been placed at a facility equipped to meet those needs.

The two of the babies remain under the direct supervision of the state at a CPFSA nursery as their cases are currently before the court.

CPFSA Chief Executive Officer Laurette Adams-Thomas says each case had unique circumstances which contributed to delays in placement.

She says these included the availability of suitable spaces, foster families able to meet the individual needs of the child as well as legal and family related issues, including family tracing.

Mrs. Adams-Thomas said while there is no law or official protocol specifying how long a child can remain at a hospital, the agency acknowledged that the babies remained at the hospital longer than it would have wanted.

She said CPFSA is continuing to pursue both family-based and residential options for children in need.
