Democrats win big in US midterm elections

Voters delivered a stunning loss to Donald Trump's Republican Party on Tuesday in the US Midterm elections, with the Democrats taking both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and in state houses across the country.

The Democratic Party's Hakeem Jeffries is slated to become the next House Speaker, the first black man in the role. There were also significant wins for black candidates for governorships and the senate.

In Texas, Gina Hinojosa becomes the first Latina governor of Texas by unseating the three-term Texas incumbent Greg Abbott.

Hinojosa's historic win in Texas mirrors that of James Talarico who handily defeated Ken Paxton to become first Democrat to win a senate seat in that state since 1988.

To win the congressional majorities, Democrats swept through even starkly red territory and won races that haven't gone Democratic in decades. In addition to the Talarico breakthrough, Democratic Party senates candidates also won historic wins in South Carolina, Kansas and Iowa.

Democrats were thus able to capitalise on President Donald Trump's historic unpopularity to secure victory, which now gives them significant power to check a president who has governed with very little constraint for the last two years.
