Donald Trump sworn in as 47th US president

Donald Trump has been sworn as the 47th president of the United States.

His vice president, J.D. Vance, also took the oath of office.

The inauguration took place indoors due to dangerously cold temperatures projected in the nation's capital.

In his remarks, Mr. Trump repeated his promise to "make America great again". He said the golden age of America begins right now, adding that the country will flourish and be respected under his leadership as a peacemaker and a unifier.

The 47th US president criticised the Biden administration and its handling of the migrant crisis, saying the country has a crisis of trust in its government.

He also reiterated that he will sign a slew of executive actions, including deporting millions of undocumented immigrants and declaring a national emergency on the US-Mexico border.

But he indicated that the highly anticipated announcement of tariffs on trade partners would not be made today.

The guest list of attendees included political leaders, former presidents and vice presidents and influential billionaires, including Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.

Meanwhile, hours before the change in US leadership, President Joe Biden issued pardons for General Mark Milley, Dr. Anthony Fauci and members of Congress who served on the committee that investigated the January 6 Capitol riot. He also issued pardons for members of his family.
