Ambassador Douglas Saunders will remain in the post of Cabinet Secretary.
He was slated to demit office on October 1, with the government naming former Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Rocky Meade as a replacement.
However, General Meade declined the appointment after much public discourse questioning the constitutionality of the move.
Minister with Responsibility for Information Robert Morgan says the Public Service Commission is to make a decision on a suitable replacement, which will then be approved by the Governor General and announced.
Ambassador Saunders has been Cabinet Secretary and head of the Public Service since June 2008.
