Education Minister mourns loss of four students in St. Ann crash

Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon says support teams will be deployed to all three institutions attended by the teens who were victims of Saturday morning's deadly car crash in St. Ann.

The crash occurred in the vicinity of the Ocho Rios Fishing Village and involved two Mercedes Benz motor cars and a Toyota Vitz.

The teens have been identified as 17 year-old Shantana Leonard, a student of Browns Town High School in St. Ann, 16 year old Kenneil Lyle, who attended Iona High School in St Mary as well as 15 year-old Rajani Abdul and 16 year-old Marcodine Maxwell, who both attended Oracabessa High in St. Mary.

They were all travelling in the Toyota Vitz, when an overtaking Mercedes Benz collided into the left front section, forcing it into the right lane where another Mercedes Benz collided into its left side.

Expressing deep sadness over the tragedy, Dr. Morris Dixon stated that the Ministry is committed to offering full support to those affected.

"Acknowledging that "the death of any child is heartbreaking," she said the impact of the sudden loss of four in this instance on the respective parents and friends and their school communities is unimaginable.

The ministry's intervention was therefore critical, she said, providing as much support as we can to the school communities, including student and staff, that "will really, really be feeling this."

She added that it will also be important for the country to address the problem of speeding on the roads.

"We have to be responsible on the roads; too many lives are lost," she stressed.

The St Ann police are searching for the drivers and passengers from the two high end vehicles, who reportedly fled the scene after hastily removing demonstration plates that were affixed to them, among other items.
