Education Ministry struggling to provide shadows for vulnerable students

By Nakinskie Robinson

Minister of Education and Youth Fayval Williams says her ministry is experiencing difficulties with providing shadows for vulnerable students.

Shadows are individuals assigned to children with special needs and behavioural issues.

Minister Williams said the ministry has been working to provide the much-needed service.

"We have at least 400 of them in the system currently that are paid for by the Ministry of Education and Youth," she said. But with more than 300 requests for shadows still remaining, the minister admitted that there is a large gap to be filled.

Mrs. Williams was speaking during Wednesday morning's post-Cabinet press briefing.

The minister also announced that its Education Philosophy for schools has been finalised.

The document, which was established out of a recommendation from the 2021 Orlando Patterson commissioned 'Reform of Education in Jamaica' report.

The philosophy sees learning as a collaborative effort between educators, students and the curriculum while pursuing efforts to ensure widespread acceptance.
