ETOC: More progress made in implementation of recommendations in JETC report

Dr. Adrian Stokes, Chairman of the Education Transformation Oversight Committee (ETOC)

The Education Transformation Oversight Committee (ETOC) is supporting 30% progress in the implementation of the 365 recommendations contained in the Jamaica Education Transformation Commission (JETC) report.

This is up from 23% progress reported in April.

Addressing the quarterly press conference, ETOC Chairman Dr. Adrian Stokes said work has started on all seven pillars.

Dr. Stokes said two more initiatives were finalised during its reporting period, bringing the total number of finalised initiatives to 17 since the project began.

Launched in July 2020, the Commission was mandated to comprehensively review and assess Jamaica's education system, including its structure, operation and processes, and recommend an action plan for change.

In the meantime, Dr. Stokes has called for urgent feedback on the Jamaica Teaching Council Bill.

He emphasized that further deliberations and consultations will occur before the bill becomes law.

"No doubt you are aware that critical stakeholders have provided important recommendations for improving the bill. While we want to see this bill implemented ASAP, there is no point moving forward while important stakeholders have material and sensible feedback that could potentially enhance the bill. My only request is that the feedback process be time bound to prevent an endless feedback loop," he suggested.

ETOC has been charged with monitoring the implementation of 365 recommendations contained in the report of the JETC, which was chaired by Professor Orlando Patterson.
