Finances of political parties could suffer during long election campaign" - Shalman Scott

Political Commentator Shalman Scott says the longer campaign period as a result of the general election to be called next year, may impact on the finances of the two major political parties.

Scott says while the reason for deciding not to call the election this year is to allow those persons who were enumerated ahead of  the September 30 deadline to participate, this may be a significant challenge for a party that may have been struggling to raise funds.

"The possibility exists that one of them may run short of funds and impact on their organisational and messaging strategies for the elections..... " Scott said.

JLP to focus on uncommitted voters

Meanwhile, the opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) says it will continue to engage voters over the Christmas period.General Secretary of the party, Dr. Horace Chang says attention will be placed on unattached voters.

"We think they are a critical part of the electorate , not only in terms of winning but they are among a large number of voters (who are) not interested in the political process.....we as a national political party has to find a way to engage as many of these persons as possible in the governance process," Change stated.
