The cause of Tuesday morning's massive fire at Ray Ray market in downtown, Kingston is under investigation.
The early morning blaze destroyed the market, along with several storage containers that were recently restocked with goods.
Superintendent Joshua Davis, in charge of operations for the Kingston & St. Andrew Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, says when firefighters arrived at the market shortly before 2 a.m., it was completely engulfed in flames.
"All stalls have been destroyed. There are a few containers...to the north side...that were not touched. On the southwest end, with two [containers], everything in those two have been totally destroyed," he reported.
Superintendent Davis raised concern about the continual fires at the market, which have displaced vendors. He also lamented that this most recent event has done more significant damage than the last.
There have been almost yearly fires at Ray Ray Market.
The last blaze was in January last year and at that time vendors described the fires as a burden on their pockets.
