Emeleo Ebanks, Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade
The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) says it will be partnering with groups which represent persons with disabilities to train firefighters with the requisite skills to effectively communicate and respond in the event of a fire.
The JFB says the effort is part of activities to mark Fire and Life Safety Awareness Week, and will be ongoing.
Groups such as the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities, Jamaica Society for the Blind, Jamaica Association for the Deaf and Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf, are partnering with the brigade in the undertaking.
Public Relations Officer for the Jamaica Fire Brigade Emeleo Ebanks said the initiative was started since most firefighters have been affected by the vulnerability of persons with disabilities, which is often overlooked.
He believes it is the first time that a fire brigade "anywhere in the world" is tailoring its message toward this vulnerable group, as the National Fire Protection Agency, which is the governing body for firefighting across the world, was "the only place where we could really go and find information for persons with disabilities".
Mr. Ebanks said senior citizens and their caregivers will also receive special attention under the initiative.
He was a guest Tuesday on TVJ's Smile Jamaica programme.
