Commissioner of Police Dr. Kevin Blake has ordered the immediate removal of the Firearms and Narcotics Investigations Division (FNID) from the oversight of the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigations Branch (C-TOC) amid a widening probe into cocaine trafficking.
The move follows the discovery and seizure of nearly five pounds of cocaine during an operation conducted on Friday morning at the headquarters of C-TOC.
The operation was carried out by detectives attached to the Narcotics Division as part of the ongoing investigation into Police Inspector Martin Walker, who was recently charged with cocaine trafficking.
Walker, who is attached to C-TOC, was released on bail following his recent court appearance.
Police say the latest seizure is also linked to a secondary high-level investigation that was launched after the discovery of two illegal parcels of cocaine inside C-TOC's storage facilities earlier this week.
That discovery was made after Deputy Commissioner of Police Richard Stewart, who heads the crime and security portfolio, ordered a comprehensive audit of the branch's storage facilities.
The illicit drugs were reportedly found in breach of established protocols.
Following the discovery, detectives assigned to FNID were immediately contacted to begin an investigation.
Meanwhile, the Jamaica Constabulary Force High Command has given its full support to FNID as it continues its probe.
The police say both the audit and investigations are ongoing.
