Gleaner, Observer move towards shared printing, distribution services

Jamaica's two major newspapers — the Gleaner Company and the Jamaica Observer — have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore sharing printing and distribution services.

The agreement covers only print production and distribution, with both companies stressing they will remain fully independent, retaining separate ownership, operations, and editorial control.

The move is aimed at developing a coordinated and efficient logistics model. Both entities will now begin planning the processes and procedures needed to form a stand-alone joint venture, while notifying the relevant regulators.

Gleaner CEO Anthony Smith said the MOU provides a structured way to evaluate the benefits of a shared logistics model in an industry facing rapid transformation.

Observer Managing Director Dominic Beaubrun described the step as practical and forward-thinking, aimed at finding smarter ways to support their missions of quality journalism and service to readers.
