Government allocates $700M to provide tablets for schools

The Jamaican Government has allocated $700 million in the 2016/2017 Estimates of Expenditure to continue the use of tablet computers to increase learning opportunities for students.

Initially, the pilot project provided android tablet devices to students and teachers in 38 institutions, free of cost.

An additional 25 institutions are to benefit from the extension of the project.

Nearly 18,000 tablet devices are expected to be distributed to more than 16,000 students and 1,100 teachers.

Funding for the project is being provided by the Universal Service Fund which collects the levy on telephone calls.
