Government promising heightened security for road work projects, in response to extortionists

The government is promising heightened security around its road repair programmes in troubled communities to combat extortion by hoodlums targeting contractors.

This after repair work on a section of the Mandela Highway in St Catherine was aborted last week when thugs attempted to extort money from the contractor.

Robert Morgan, the minister having responsibility for Works, revealed on Sunday that Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Police Commissioner Dr Kevin Blake have been briefed and new measures will be implemented to protect the workers.

Mr Morgan, speaking on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap, also pleaded for patience from the public, in the face of growing discontent among motorists over the poor state of roads following the recent heavy rains.

He said repairs, under the government's multi-billion dollar SPARK programme, are to come on stream next month.

The J$45 billion dollar initiative is expected to continue through to March 2027.

The Minister said a further $600 million has been allocated to the National Works Agency to carry out road repairs.
