Pressure is mounting for the Government to amend the law that subsumed the duties of the Political Ombudsman into the Electoral Commission of Jamaica ahead of the upcoming parliamentary general election.
The Office of the Political Ombudsman was integrated into the ECJ last year.
Since then, former Political Ombudsman Donna Parchment Brown as well as civil society representatives have called for a reversal of the 2024 legislative amendment, especially with the election due in a few months.
Mrs Parchment Brown, speaking Tuesday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, urged the Government to repeal the amendment and appoint a political ombudsman to address issues that will arise during the campaign period.
Dr. Lloyd Barnett, Director at Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections [CAFFE] added that the current structure of the Office of the Political Ombudsman being rolled into the Electoral Commission of Jamaica is impracticable.
He observed that, under the current system, concerned persons could be dissuaded from making confidential reports about issues during political campaigns.
Principal Director of National Integrity Action Danielle Archer, in her own intervention on the issue, noted that the ECJ has been inactive in its role as Political Ombudsman.
