Highest one-day electricity use this year occurred on July 15

The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited says it recorded the highest electricity use since the start of the year on July 15, when demand hit 670.8 megawatts amid rising temperatures.

The JPS says the spike in electricity demand is typical during the summer months as customers use fans and air conditioners in an attempt to stay cool, which means electricity bills could be higher.

In July 2023 Jamaica hit its highest demand ever for electricity when the JPS recorded a peak demand of 692 megawatts.

To manage electricity usage the public is encouraged to stay hydrated to keep cool and reduce the use of air conditioners.

Additionally, to reduce indoor temperatures, members of the public are being advised to block out the sun by closing blinds and curtains during the hottest parts of the day.
