INDECOM offers to help secure funeral grant for victim of police fatal shooting

By Nakinskie Robinson

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it has offered assistance to obtain a funeral grant for Matthew Small, who was the victim of a double police fatal shooting last December.

This, after Mr. Small's family revealed in a recent article that almost a year on from his death, they have not been able to bury him due to financial challenges.

INDECOM says it has made contact with Mr. Small's family, however, it says a referral will not guarantee grant assistance.

The family says assistance has been pledged from government agencies with none forthcoming.

Mr. Small was one of two persons who died in a shooting in Ewarton, St. Catherine on December 13 last year.

INDECOM says the planned police operation had no eyewitnesses and no body-worn cameras were issued or used by the team.

INDECOM Commissioner Hugh Faulkner says, since 2021, through the Family Liaison Officers, the police watchdog body has integrated investigations with social intervention referrals, to offer social and economic support to citizens.

Since its introduction, there have been thirty referrals for funeral grants, with 11 successfully confirmed.
