INDECOM probes police shooting of patient at KPH

Prince Moore reports

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the shooting of a patient on a ward at the Kingston Public Hospital by members of the police force.

The shooting occurred on Monday.

The drama started about 5 a.m. when a 55-year-old man attacked and seriously injured a 13-year-old student who was a patient on Ward 2 of the KPH.

The teenager was stabbed with an object by the man, who was also a patient on the ward.

Frightened staff members and nurses then summoned the police to the ward to restrain the enraged patient.

When the cops arrived on the ward, they reportedly saw the man behaving in a boisterous manner and armed with a metal pipe in his hand.

Radio Jamaica News was informed that the police immediately gave him repeated instructions to desist from his behaviour and to drop the object, but he refused and reportedly advanced towards them in a threatening manner.

He was then shot three times in the upper body.

The 55-year-old was then rushed to the accident and emergency department for treatment. He is now on the police guard facing criminal charges.

The teenager was treated for her injuries.
