A major investigation is underway to determine what led to the recent derailment of a bauxite train operated by mining company Jamalco Clarendon Alumina Works.
The incident occurred on Sunday. A source with knowledge of the train derailment says a three member crew of two Jamalco workers and a security officer were en route to Rocky Point Port when the derailment occurred. The derailment put a temporary brake on the hauling of alumina.
Its understood that preliminary investigations reveal that two sets of joint bars were removed along the section of the rail track where the incident occurred
Rail track parts including joint bars, bolts and nuts were seen in bushes along the rail track.
Investigators are not able to determine if sabotage is at the heart of the derailment. When contacted JAMALCO's Communication administrator Donna Marie-Gordon confirmed the train derailment. Mrs. Gordon says JAMALCo's management is not speculating on the cause of the derailment and is awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.
The JAMALCO spokesperson says on Monday the management ordered the trucking of alumina to the Port in Rocky Point and that normal operations are underway.
In the meantime an emergency response team transported the three men to the Medical department for examination.
They were reviewed by Medical staff and later released.
