The Irwin High School community in St. James is in mourning following the death of a grade seven student who was hit by a Montego Bay Metro bus on Wednesday.

She has been identified as Deanna Solomon.

Board chairman Nevin Nish says end of year exams have been suspended Thursday to allow Deanna's classmates and the wider school community to grieve.

"The entire school community is in deep shock and mourning as we face another devastating loss of one of our very promising grade 7 students, Deanna Solomon. We just ask for continued prayers and support at this time for the school's mental strength. The school stands with the parents and we just ask for continued prayers and comfort for the family as they are going through a gruelling period at this time," he bemoaned.

It's reported that sometime after 3 p.m., students were gathered outside the school gate awaiting transportation on the Metro bus.

As the vehicle approached, Deanna was pushed into its path by another student.

She was rushed to Cornwall Regional Hospital, but died Wednesday night during surgery.
