Dr. Althea Aquart-Stewart, Consultant Pulmonologist, and Barbara McGaw, Tobacco Control Advisor

Two experts are again warning about the serious health implications of smoking, while also worrying that the government has not been sufficiently proactive in pursuing tobacco control measures.

Dr. Althea Aquart-Stewart, Consultant Pulmonologist at the University Hospital of the West Indies, stressed on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines on Friday that smoking often leads to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

COPD is a progressive lung disease, characterized by persistent airflow obstruction and respiratory symptoms.

It includes conditions like emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Barbara McGaw, Tobacco Control Advisor at the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control, who was also on Beyond the Headlines, voiced concern that the government has been slow to review the Tobacco Control Act, submitted to parliament five years ago.
