Foreign Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith
Foreign Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith has announced that Jamaica's updated national climate action plan has been formally submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Senator Johnson Smith says the plan sets out emission reduction targets of between 26 and 41.7% by 2035 and highlights Jamaica's progress towards achieving 50% renewable energy by 2030.
"Remember, we are at 15% of protecting our maritime waters and 25% of our terrestrial. So when the world is speaking about bringing countries on board to agree to the 30 by 30, we are already working at 30 by 30. We are halfway there for marine and well on our way for terrestrial and we will get even further. But in doing these things, in all of this work, we also recognise that championing sustainability of our oceans, which will sustain and support climate stability and biodiversity, it will also create jobs," the minister pointed out.
Senator Johnson Smith, who was speaking at Wednesday's post-cabinet media briefing, added that the Jamaican government is anticipating the signing of the UN Convention against Cybercrime next month in Vietnam.
She noted that Jamaica has also been leading the negotiations on behalf of CARICOM.
The first ever UN Convention against Cybercrime was approved by consensus last year after three years of negotiations.
The Convention had faced opposition from human rights groups which warned of possible dangers such as surveillance of citizens.
