Jamaica to review its disaster preparedness and response mechanism

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said Jamaica's disaster preparedness and response mechanism is to be reviewed.

The Prime Minister said the passage of Hurricane Beryl has highlighted a number of gaps.

"There are some changes in systems that we need to look at very carefully and there are some things that we need to do that we weren't thinking about before. And so, it's important to do a review. We have gone through two disasters. We have gone through the COVID disaster and we're going through this one now. And so there are some learnings which we need to take and institutionalise."

He said he will soon announce the Hurricane Beryl Review Committee, which the government will use to "do a thorough review of the process" so that changes can be made to strengthen the country's resilience for recovery.
