Jamaican doctors not trained to conduct abortions

Former President of the Medical Association of Jamaica, Dr. Errol Daley, is warning women seeking abortions that doctors are not trained to carry out the procedure here in Jamaica.

According to Dr. Daley, because abortion is generally not legal in Jamaica no training is provided for it.

"So, patients who are going to the doctor thinking that the doctor knows how to do abortions, they are wrong. The doctor is not trained to do abortion. He is not trained because in countries like ours where abortions are illegal doctors are not trained therefore they have to train themselves and self-trained doctors are not the best doctors to do procedures," said Dr. Daley.

The well known obstetrician/ gynaecologist was speaking at a public forum on the abortion issue at Bethel Baptist Church in St. Andrew, on Sunday.

Roman Catholic deacon and Member of Parliament, Ronnie Thwaites, reaffirmed his strong stance against proposals to liberalise the abortion law, relying on moral arguments for his position.

"I really respectfully and regretfully question how any responsible legislator can separate law from morality. Any law that does not have a strong moral base is nothing but tyranny and we must be very careful in using extreme cases whether rape or incest to change an entire situation which would basically open the door to abortion on demand," said Deacon Thwaites.
