JDF cooperating with police probe after soldier found dead along Palisadoes

The Jamaica Defence Force says it is cooperating with the Jamaica Constabulary Force in the investigation into the death of a soldier on Tuesday morning.

 

Corporal Sekou Medder was found dead in a JDF service vehicle along the Norman Manley Highway in Kingston, commonly known as the Palisadoes.

 

His body had a bullet wound.

 

A weapon was recovered from him.

 

Major Kason Gunzell, Public Relations Manager for the JDF, said the force is "saddened" by the soldier's "tragic" death but he declined to comment on what may have led to the incident. 

 

"The incident is currently being investigated by the police, and we are collaborating as best as possible. Our priority at this time is to offer support to family members and service members who were close to the service member. I want to also use this opportunity to appeal to the media and the public to be sensitive to the nature of this incident and also to respect the privacy of the family members and the colleagues so affected," he said, adding that the JDF is awaiting the outcome of the investigation.  

 

The JDF said its Chaplaincy and Welfare Department is providing counselling and support services to the soldier's family and the Battalion to which he was attached.
