JPS starts disconnecting on Fridays

Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) customers who used to take comfort that they would not have supplies disconnected on weekends, no longer have that assurance.

The utility company now says delinquent customers face an increased risk of disconnection for non-payment on any weekday, including Fridays.

According to the Head of Corporate Communications at the JPS Winsome Callum, the decision is an attempt to curb the increasing number of delinquencies.

"We have had the commitment of many customers who ask for extension for extra time, usually until Friday and usually once the customer ask some consideration when we say Friday we expect the customer to live up to his or her commitment, unfortunately in many cases the customers take advantage of this commitment because they feel that there is no disconnection on a Friday," she said.

The JPS is urging its customers to make use of the wide range of bill payment options available to them, in order to prevent the disconnection of their electricity supply.

Ms. Callum says customers whose power is disconnected on a Friday can make use of the varied payment options available at bill payment facilities, banks and via tele-banking and online services.

Several of these options are available on weekends, to facilitate customers who get disconnected on a Friday.

The reconnection process begins once there is verification by the utility company that the arrears have been cleared.

She says this can be done by relaying the payment receipt numbers to the JPS via its hotline.

However the JPS is reminding customers that in addition to the inconvenience of being without power, customers who are disconnected are required to pay a reconnection fee of $1441, and could also be asked to pay an upgrade on their deposit.

Re-connections are done every day, except Sundays.
