President of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA), La Sonja Harrison, has called for a comprehensive review of the security needs of schools across the island.
Mrs. Harrison has bemoaned the reality of a number of educational institutions being at the mercy of criminals due to a lack of perimeter fencing.
She said administrators have written to the Education Ministry to address the situation, singling out Spanish Town Infant School where she said the chain link fence is inadequate.
"The JTA is calling for a risk based assessment of school security and a public time-bound programme addresssing perimeter fencing and the wider security needs of our schools. Even further, where are the promised CCTV systems after the Braeton Primary School incident that occurred in June 2023? What of the increased number of school resource officers requested in the JTA's 25-28 claim? she questioned.
Mrs. Harrison was speaking at Sea Garden Hotel in St. James this week.
