Judiciary mourns as police probes Trelawny parish judge's death

 

The Trelawny Police says a thorough investigation has been launched into the circumstances, which resulted in the death of parish court judge Ruth Lawrence.

 

Superintendent Velonique Campbell, head of the Trelawny Police, said at this stage, the police are conducting a death investigation into the case in which Judge Lawrence is suspected to have ingested poison at her home in Coral Springs Village on Tuesday. 

 

"This particular incident is being treated as a death investigation. The police at this point will not be making any premature pronouncement. All the information and items of evidence will be examined and updates will be provided at the appropriate time as the investigation progresses," the senior cop told Radio Jamaica News. 

 

The 59-year-old jurist was reportedly transported to Falmouth Hospital by her spouse, where she was pronounced dead

sometime after 7 p.m. 

 

The death of the judge has sparked shock in the judiciary, with Chief Justice Bryan Sykes among those expressing sadness at her passing. 

 

In extending his condolences, Justice Sykes said Judge Lawrence dedicated her life to the service of justice, exemplifying unwavering commitment, compassion and professionalism throughout her career.

 

"Her judicial career commenced as a resident magistrate in 2009, and she served in various parishes in Western Jamaica, Westmoreland, Trelawny, St. James, St. Ann. She played a vital role as the chairperson of the children's circuit in the then Northern Circuit and as a key member of the Western Regional Family Court. Her service extended beyond the courtroom, to enriching the lives of countless persons, children, families and communities through her leadership and compassion. Her sudden passing is a profound loss to the courts and to all those who knew her. To her family, colleagues and friends, I extend my deepest sympathies during this difficult time," said the Chief Justice. 

 

Michael Hemmings, President of the Cornwall Bar Association, said both the St. James Parish Court and Trelawny Parish Court paid tribute to Judge Lawrence on Wednesday. 

 

He said her passing has further plunged the legal fraternity in western Jamaica into mourning, following the death of another attorney.

 

Defence attorney Denley Saddoo, who practiced primarily in Westmoreland, died on Monday.
