Justice Minister Senator Mark Golding says Jamaicans should show greater tolerance towards members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, LGBT community.
Golding made the call as the local LGBT community embarks on a week of activities called Pride Jamaica 2015 to build awareness of its members' rights.
In a statement posted on the website of the Jamaica Forum of Lesbians, All Sexuals and Gays (JFLAG), Golding said he supports the rights of all Jamaicans including members of the LBGT community to express their opinions through any lawful means.
He added that while many Jamaicans remain opposed to and uncomfortable with non-heterosexual forms of behavioural expression, he believes the society is trending towards greater tolerance and against violence in relation to LGBT issues.
Pride Jamaica coincides with Emancipation and Independence celebrations.
It started on Saturday and will end of Thursday, which is Independence Day.
