Kamala Harris gets vote of confidence from father's hometown in St. Ann

US Vice President Kamala Harris has received a strong vote of confidence from the community of Brown's Town in St. Ann as she takes on what could be a historic feat if she wins the November 2024 presidential election.

Ms. Harris, who is of Jamaican descent, is looking to first secure the democratic party's candidacy after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

Her father, Economist and Professor Donald Harris, is a native of Brown's Town, where several relatives reside.

As her campaign picks up pace in the US with more than $81 million being donated in the 24 hours since Mr. Biden exited the race, former councillor for the Brown's Town division, Delroy Redway, says her record of achievement speaks for itself.

"She has always been a thinker, she has always been a person who performs and therefore, if she's allowed to complete a term that Joe Biden would if he should step down and allow her to complete that term, it would enhance her effectiveness. As a citizen of Brown's Town we would be more than excited and all Jamaica, I'm sure, we would want to see her put one more stripe in the Jamaican success story. We have influenced so many countries and to see her on the threshold of being the President of the United States of America, Brown's Town would be the most happy place to be on that night," Mr. Redway declared.

Sherman Harris, who said he is the Vice President's cousin, believes Ms. Harris understands what is needed to serve the American people.

"The US has always been on that path of improving and improving and improving, so she's fully aware of that also and is a great part of that now too. I'm very proud of her in the sense that she has studied very hard; very intelligent girl. Someone of her level of intelligence is really hard to find, as she has gotten that from her father. And her mother is also intelligent, and she and I [were] born the same month, a day apart, the same age, everything. So, you know, she's my favourite little girl," Mr. Harris said proudly.

In 2021 the community also welcomed Ms. Harris' historic appointment to the post of US Vice President.

Since Sunday, more leading Democrats are backing Ms. Harris as the party's new presidential nominee.

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on Monday said her support for Harris is official, personal and political.
