Customers at KFC Manor Park, speaking with TVJ's Kirk Wright, and ACP Gary McKenzie outlining the police response to the chaos
There were chaotic scenes at some KFC outlets on Wednesday as customers responded enthusiastically to the advertised "Big Deal Brawta" in celebration of the company's 50th anniversary in Jamaica.
Customers camped out at various locations hours before the scheduled opening times, hoping to get in.
One customer at the Manor Park branch, who said he was the first to arrive at that location, proclaimed KFC's chicken "the national dish," supplanting the traditional ackee and saltfish, in his estimation.
Another customer, enthusiastically commended "Uncle Colenel" (a nod to the company's American founder, "Colonel Sanders") for "being so good to us for 50 years!"
The overwhelming response to the promotion led to gridlock in already congested sections of the Corporate Area such as Half-Way-Tree and Cross Road and New Kingston, and in various other towns across the island such as Portmore, and Spanish Town and Old Harbour in St. Catherine, Brown's Town in St Ann.
The police were called in to calm heated tempers as in some instances as determined customers who were not going to be left out, tried to force their way into the stores to get a bite of their favorite meal.
During today the frenzy, there were reports of damage to some of the outlets as customers smashed through glass doors.
Radio Jamaica's correspondent in Western Jamaica sent a video recording of the shattered glass door at the KFC outlet in Savanna-La-Mar, Westmoreland.
It's reported that another outlet at The Bargain Village in May Pen, Clarendon was also damaged.
In Old Harbour, there were heated exchanges among customers outside the restaurant, leading to the intervention of the police.
