One of Jamaica's leading auditing firms is facing a security scare following a recent data breach.
It's understood that on January 17, an employee uploaded an internal data set containing employment information for KPMG Jamaica Extended Support Services (JESS) to a restricted personal workspace within an external cloud environment called Azure Databricks.
The company says its review confirmed that the data set contained a routine employment related information, including staff identification, names, job roles, employment timeline and reporting structure. But it assured
employees that no financial health or other sensitive data were included.
KPMG JESS says once the incident was identified, it put into motion a series of measures including permanently deleting the file from the external environment on January 20.
The auditing firm says it has confirmed that the file cannot be retrieved or restored from the site.
The company says its analysis found no indication that the file was downloaded, copied, shared or misused.
The matter has been reported to the Office of the Information Commissioner.
The company says it will continue to monitor the situation for any indicators of misuse, though none have been identified.
