La Sonja Harrison to return as JTA president

La Sonja Harrison is to serve a second stint as president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) after she secured a decisive win in the 2025 JTA president-elect election.

The election was held last week.

Some 6,651 teachers voted in favour of Ms. Harrison, principal of St. Faith's Primary School.

The JTA says, having secured the highest number of votes in the preliminary account, Mrs. Harrison has been declared president-elect designate.

The other two candidates, Jermaine Williams, a teacher of the Mannings School, received 2,771 votes, and Dr. Maureen Mullings-Nelson, lecturer at the Mico University College, polled 1,883.

A total 11,610 votes were cast in the election.

Mrs. Harrison will be officially proclaimed at the JTA's 61st annual conference scheduled for August 18-20 at the Princess Grand Hotel in Hanover.

Her victory comes amid her lawsuit against the JTA regarding its acceptance of the 2022-25 government wage offer.

Mrs. Harrison contends that the virtual vote of a special delegates' conference in March 2023 was unconstitutional, arguing that only in-person voting is permitted under section 14 of the JTA Constitution.

She also stoked controversy after leaving the room before the deal was signed with the government. Then President-elect Leighton Johnson signed off on behalf of the union.
