The Medical Association of Jamaica says there appears to be local transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus or COVID-19, and has joined the Ministry of Health in advising Jamaicans to be vigilant.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness on Thursday warned of a spike in the transmission of the virus among the population.
MAJ President Dr. Leslie Meade says the association's members have seen an increase in people seeking treatment for symptoms of the virus over the last three weeks.
Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Friday morning, the MAJ president said persons have been presenting with the typical viral symptoms of congestion, headache and fever.
While test results have not yet come, he believes the symptoms indicate that the majority of cases are "more than likely COVID-19".
Dr. Meade said the majority of those seeking treatment have not travelled recently, suggesting that the spread of the virus is localised.
The Health Ministry says the country recorded 176 COVID-19 cases last month, a 16 per cent increase from the 152 recorded in June.
It says Kingston and St. Andrew recorded the highest number of cases with 25 per cent, followed by St. Catherine and St. James which both had 18 per cent.
In the meantime, the MAJ president has reinforced the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Persons are being told to get tested, remain at home if feeling ill, wear a mask to prevent spread of respiratory droplets, practice proper sneezing and coughing etiquette especially when in public spaces, and wash hands or use hand sanitisers.
Jamaicans travelling abroad are especially urged to be diligent in practicing these infection prevention protocols.
Dr. Meade also raised concern for people 60 years and older, those who are immuno-compromised and have chronic conditions. He urged these vulnerable groups to ensure they take the COVID-19 booster shot to help protect against the virus.
Thirteen COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Jamaica since the start of the year.
