Man assaulted by cops during traffic stop paid $400,000 after mediation

By Halshane Burke

A successful mediation exercise has brought an end to an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) into the 2022 assault of a man.

Two police officers each made a payment of $200,000, for a total of $400,000 to the complainant.

The Police Constables had been placed before the St. Catherine Parish Court on October 15 last year for the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, following an investigation by INDECOM and a ruling from the Office of the Public Prosecutions.

The incident involved a traffic stop which escalated to the complainant being injured.

Following their first court appearance, a trial date was set for January 28, 2025, at which time those concerned agreed to explore dispute resolution by way of mediation.

Subsequent to the successful mediation and confirmation of payment to the complainant, the Crown offered no evidence and the two police officers were formally found not guilty.
