The St. Mary Police have charged Wendell Mills with the murder of 61-year-old pastor and farmer Rollin Henry of Gayle Spring in the parish.
Mr. Mills was charged on the weekend and is to appear in court on Thursday.
Reports are that on April 14, Mr. Henry was at home with his wife and son when they detected the scent of smoke. While making checks, they observed a man known to them, setting fire to a section of their washroom.
The man said to be mentally challenged.
Mr. Henry, accompanied by his son and armed with two machetes, confronted the suspect during the encounter.
The suspect allegedly disarmed them and used one of the machetes to inflict chop wounds to Mr. Henry's head and feet.
The son managed to escape unharmed.
