Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie
Local Government and Community Development Minister Desmond McKenzie has joined calls for the timely removal of political paraphernalia following the conclusion of the September 3 general election.
The law requires that the materials be removed 14 days after an election, which in this case is September 17.
Mr. McKenzie said the cooperation of all political parties is important.
"The elections are over. It is important that the country return to normality, and one of the ways in which we can contribute to the return is to ensure that Jamaica continues to look pretty, to look good. So I am urging all political players right across the country and I am urging the municipal corporations, the mayors to be vigilant and to ensure that the signs and billboards and the flags are removed within reasonable time. I urge support from all well-thinking Jamaicans," he said.
Mayor of Montego Bay and chairman of the St. James Municipal Corporation, Richard Vernon, last week ordered that political advertisements and paraphernalia from the recently concluded general election be removed from public spaces in the parish by September 17.
He warned that failure to comply will result in such materials being classified as litter and subject to enforcement under the relevant municipal and environmental laws. He added that the municipal corporation's team is already mobilised and prepared to act decisively.
The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation has also made a similar appeal.
